Sa question lui valut un regard empli de mépris de la part de Nini, tandis que Carmelia, toujours maîtrisant ses émotions, observa ses meilleurs amis avec des yeux encore plus froids. Ses sentiments contradictoires l'envahissant, elle se dirigea vers le cheval et lança : « Ne sois pas stupide, Melvin. » Malheureusement pour elle, leur tournant le dos, elle ne vit pas les expressions qui se dessinèrent sur leurs visages : une colère et une humiliation extrêmes les submergèrent à cet instant, leur rage éclatant alors qu'ils fixaient Carmelia avec intensité. La vérité était que leur comportement envers Carmel avait changé, mais malheureusement pour ceux à l'arrière, ce qu'ils crurent voir était tout autre chose : l'image de Carmel si heureuse avec Austin mais si distante avec eux revint hanter leurs esprits. Les deux chevaux se serraient l'un contre l'autre, Austin et Carmel se rapprochant, sa personnalité enjouée s'exprimant pleinement tandis qu'Austin guidait les oiseaux autour d'elle. La liberté et le bonheur de cette aventure firent rire Carmel comme jamais, lui donnant envie de rester près d'Austin, tout se déroulant harmonieusement. Et les deux à l'arrière ne purent que contempler cette scène, couverts de fientes, Carmel ne leur accordant même pas un regard. L'humiliation les rongeait davantage, surtout lorsque Nini les empêcha de riposter, mais ses pouvoirs leur firent comprendre que toute autre initiative de leur part se retournerait contre eux. De petits problèmes continuèrent à survenir pendant le voyage. Ils croisèrent ainsi un troupeau de magnifiques animaux ressemblant à des paons, à la peau rouge et aux plumes scintillantes de pourpre et d'or. Ces herbivores puissants parcouraient la forêt. Carmel poussa un cri d'admiration devant leur beauté, et une fois encore, Nini leur ordonna de ne pas les déranger. Mais Nix et Melvin, toujours brimés, imaginèrent un plan pour capturer un oiseau ou du moins récupérer quelques plumes afin de faire sourire Carmel ou de gagner son approbation. Ils s'approchèrent donc des oiseaux, ce qui tourna au désastre. Les puissantes bêtes de niveau Origine 7 semblaient furieuses et les attaquèrent, non mortellement, mais leurs pattes robustes brisèrent facilement leurs défenses, les piétinant sans ménagement. Les bêtes utilisèrent ensuite leur crinière étincelante pour créer une danse illusoire à laquelle les deux garçons succombèrent. Résultat : ils se mirent à danser contre leur gré, exécutant des mouvements humiliants que même des courtisanes auraient refusé, sous l'emprise des illusions. Austin dut intervenir, apaisant les bêtes. Sous les yeux de Nix et Melvin, une scène romantique se déroula : Austin enlaçant Carmel par derrière, guidant ses mains excitées vers les plumes que les bêtes mécontentes leur offrirent uniquement parce qu'Austin l'avait décidé. « Pourquoi ?... Leurs mots révélèrent soudain leurs sentiments, mais cela ne fit que décevoir davantage Carmel. Ses meilleurs amis agissaient ainsi pendant un voyage censé sauver sa sœur ? N'avaient-ils pas vanté leur détermination à secourir sa petite sœur ? Alors pourquoi étaient-ils ceux qui causaient le plus de problèmes et retardaient le groupe ? « Pauvres idiots... » Elle ne put que murmurer ces mots, secouant la tête avec déception avant de rejoindre Austin, son regard s'illuminant légèrement à sa vue. Les deux garçons à terre grincèrent des dents, leurs pensées obscurcies, incapables de voir leurs erreurs à cause des ténèbres envahissant leurs cœurs. Ils ne voyaient plus que colère et jalousie, se sentant perdus et impuissants. Ainsi, par leur comportement et leurs actes, la seconde fissure était apparue...
